Earth Day Is Here — April 22, 2008
What Are You Going To Do About It? (Take Photos, We Hope)
Take photos of whatever you do on Earth Day -- that's what you should do. And send them to us so we can run them on RiverWired to inspire us all the rest of the year, too.
While there is some dispute about which day is really THE genuine Earth Day, we've decided April 22 is close enough for us. Besides, what really matters is that you take a day, any day, and celebrate the earth.
We'll tell you our plans if you’ll tell us yours.
OK — we’ll go first.
But then PLEASE CLICK on Comments below -- and add your comments. ‘Cause if you come up with cooler things to do, we may just change our plans.
TEAM RIVERWIRED’S EARTH DAY PLANS
Kathie Butler, Celebrity Dirt
I plan to pick up every piece of trash I see on my block.
Jennifer Chait, Green Home
I celebrate Earth Day by trying to live each each day as if it were Earth Day - not simply celebrating this one day a year.
Jason Chatraw, All Green Books
This Earth Day, I will be helping my wife with her garden and planting some trees in our yard with my 18-month-old daughter, the world’s youngest environmentalist.
Samantha Cleaver, Local Food
For Earth Day, I will cook the first all-local, 100-mile dinner of the year, a Michigan quiche.
Kristen Hall-Geisler, Green Car Report
This Earth Day, I plan on finally buying the compost bin I've been meaning to buy since we bought our house -- three and a half years ago!
Ellen Honigstock, Green Architecture
Mine will be necessarily modest given that I’ll be 39 weeks pregnant at that point.? I’ll be making yogurt. We’re great recyclers but the one thing that drives me crazy is that you can’t recycle yogurt containers (and we eat a LOT of yogurt) so we bought a yogurt maker. 13 watts/quart and they are served up in cute little re-usable glass containers.
Colleen Kane, Green Love and Weddings
I will be tending to my new garden, and will hopefully incorporate at least one ingredient from it while making dinner on Earth Day.
Anjuli Kronheim, Campus Reports
On April 22, I'll host the 11th Hour Documentary, narrated by Leonardo Dicaprio at Ithaca College at 7:30pm.
Will Nicklin, CTO
For this year's Earth Day, I'll try to keep it low impact by working from home (since I work from home every day, does that count?) and maybe plant a tree or two.
Deborah Ng, Celebrity Dirt
My son and I always talk about Earth Day and what it means and why we need to take care of the earth. We usually work outside gardening or preparing the garden for spring planting. Unless there’s a special event like a free concert in the park or an Earth Day story at the library we don’t really do anything differently, because respecting the earth is a way of life for us.
Julia Pergolini, Campus Reports
I’ll be watching the film The 11th Hour and going to a lecture about Native American Environmentalism, all while running around campus organizing Ithaca College Earth Day events.
John Platt, Green Tech
I will be enjoying the great outdoors at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens.
Marcus Ricci, Assistant Editor
I’ll be biking everywhere I go, eating some local produce, and frolicking about in the great outdoors.
Susan Seliger, Editor-in-Chief
I will walk away from the computer, ride my bike to Central Park, pick up some trash, and mostly give thanks for this amazing parkland smack in the middle of this skyscraper city.
NOW TELL US ABOUT YOUR PLANS!

I hope you'll send us before and after photos of your vertical herb garden -- would love to see it in bloom. Thanks for the idea.
Spreading the word
| aclubb | Mar 31st, 2008My company (InterCall) is going to host a free webinar discussing what businesses can do to make a difference in the environment. We'll have the COO discuss how his company has been successful. You can register here, if you'd like: http://www2.eventsvc.com/intercall2/042208?trk=code14
On a more personal note, I hope to start the company paper recycling by the end of the month. There's a local program where schools are using paper recycling as a fund raiser.
On a more, more personal note, I am going to teach my almost 2 year old how to plant some seeds! We're going to see if we can grow some watermelons in time for summer. Talk about eating local!

Mary Kate-- Perfect combo -- a green fashion trifecta -- an idea that's good for you, good for the earth -- and a moneysaver, too. (Not to mention a gift to those who get to see you in those spring skirts!) Thanks for the inspiration. :<}

Unplug-- good plan. And wise to keep the well going. Just wondering -- becasue I was thinking about doing the same ....does that mean you have to re-set the clock by the bedside when you turn things back on?
